Another “Terror” post.

So in light of the fact that those mad Scots have released al-Megrahi (the
“Lockerby Bomber”) to live his last couple of months in his homeland of Libya, I thought I post my thoughts…

As far as I’m concerned, this is the first actual step forward in the “war on terror” since 9/11. Hear me out, I know this sounds weird. The terrorists want to scare us right, they want us to live in constant fear of some nutter blowing us up right?

I heard a comedian on TV the other light heartedly claiming that the terrorists had already won because what once once a hilarious rite of passage for many a youth – the fake bomb threat – is now not only not funny at all anymore, but will probably land you in gaol for a looooong time.

Despite his humour, he made an interesting point. This is what the terrorists have done to us. What was once light hearted and funny is now deadly serious. Where once we let our kids out to play until sunset, now we’re afraid of letting them out of the house unattended. I mean for fucks sake, our train stations don’t even have garbage bins anymore for fear of some madman blowing it up.

This is the real aim of any terrorist. It’s not the bomb, it’s not the immediate death and destruction, it’s the fear, the ongoing uncertainty, that’s why they’re called terrorists and not violent-blow-things-up motherfuckers.

If we allow ourselves to live constantly with this fear over our heads, then shit yes! the terrorists have well and truly won. Every time there’s an alarmist headline in a newspaper, everytime our trusted newscasters tell us how unsafe we are, everytime we’re reminded of how these people have hurt us, it is another on-target bullet fired by the terrorists – hell, we’ve ended up terrorising ourselves! Osama must be pissing himself laughing right now about how highly strung and shit scared the West has become.

The only way to take back the power from these maniacs is not to try to blow them the fuck up, we’ve got 8 years of evidence that that doesn’t work at all – you can’t fight an enemy that doesn’t really exist, and the more you try, the more you piss off the locals, and the more they turn to extremism. It’s a vicious cycle that will not end until we realise a new way forward.

I remember being told as a nerdy little kid that you shouldn’t react to the bullies – “Ignore them and they’ll go away, they’re just looking for a reaction, for a little attention”. That’s what these terrorists are doing – looking for a little attention. The only way to stop them is to ignore it. Not fill our newspapers and nightly news shows with fear and hatred, just ignore them, they’ll eventually go away.

Sure, there will be more attacks, sure there will be pain and suffering, but once the maniacs realise they can’t scare us anymore, they’ll have to stop.

I think the Scots have done a wonderful thing by “forgiving” al-Megrahi. What they’ve done is basically say to the world “Sure we’ve been hurt terribly by this man and his agenda, but we are a compassionate people who can learn to forgive. We choose to the right thing in this instance and not to stoop to the levels of those who would see us destroyed. We choose to do this now to show the world that we can rise above these evil bastards would see us dead, and be the better person…”

I applaud the Scottish government and its’ people. You have done a good thing which will be remembered in time as the first step in really dealing with the true problem of terrorism.

Seriously now, let’s just tone it all down bit, try to ignore the fuckers and just learn to live our lives again.Go for a walk, visit a country that has current travel warnings, wear your burquini to the beach, but for Xenus’ sake, don’t call in a bloody bomb threat!
